“Swing” by Josiah and the Bonnevilles – A Song Review

An electric guitar delivers a warm invitation into the melody, while the lyrics present a cold challenge to take your best shot. Before the electric guitar establishes its ground at 0:35, the lyrics announce, “It’s gonna be one hell of a fight.” Still, “Swing” establishes an equilibrium between the lyrical description of a relationship destined for destruction and comforting instrumental support.

“Swing” includes Country-influenced Folk Rock guitar, similar to The Byrds. The arrangement and mixing are praiseworthy. The guitar is seldom in the spotlight of this vocals-driven song. But once a listener plays the song with a focus on the instruments, all subsequent listens carry an appreciation of the roles of the instruments.

Josiah and the Bonnevilles are based in Morristown, Tennessee. The members are Josiah Leming (vocals, guitar), Stephen Johnson (guitar, vocals), and Josh Nyback (bass, percussion).

     Quoting content posted at SubmitHub:
"'Swing' brings you in at the dreaded 'beginning of the end', where the singer is resiliently standing his ground while pleading with his lover to take one more swing. A lesson in futility with hopeful undertones, 'Swing' is all around refreshing - from the sonic build of the song to its unresolved lyrics."

Lyrics of “Swing” by Josiah and the Bonnevilles
I step into my corner
I gather up my mind
She’s standing over my shoulder
It’s gonna be one hell of a fight

She moves in my direction
She’s such a lovely thing
I put aside my affection
She says to me
“Baby take your swing
Take your swing”

She falls back into the ocean
Full of blood and rage
She rises up as a cloud form
Bringing her friend, the rain

Now she’s so high up above me
She’s coming down in waves
But I, I never worry
Baby, I don’t feel your pain

Take your swing
(Oh)
Take your swing
(Oh)

You think you got the best of me
You think you left me hurt
But I’ve been had much better
And I’ve been left much worse

I steal a shot in the darkness
I still walk through the fire
And I, come out on the other side
And the angels take me higher

Take your swing
(Oh)
Take your swing
(Oh)

I step into my corner
I gather up my mind
She’s standing over my shoulder
I’m getting ready for a hell of a fight

She moves in my direction
She’s such a lovely thing
But I, there’s no more affection
Come on to me
Baby, Take your swing
(Oh)
Take your swing
(Oh)
Baby, take your swing
