“Walk the Other Way” by Bend Sinister – A Song Review

Bend Sinister released “Walk the Other Way” as a single from their upcoming EP of the same name. The EP is scheduled to drop on September 29, 2017. Judging from the quality of the title track, Indie Obsessive is looking forward to hearing the full EP.

All four members of this band from Vancouver, British Columbia contribute to the vocals. That is already an advantage over most bands, but listening to “Walk the Other Way,” it sounds as though there are numerous other contributors to the backing vocals. The result is a textured richness. Our favorite five seconds (no one asked)? They start at 1:07, when the rhythm temporarily channels “Ms. Jackson” by Outkast, while the message is closer to "I'd Love to Change the World" by Ten Years After. Our favorite overall feature? The interaction among the guitar and the vocal layers in the final minute of the track.

The members of Bend Sinister are Daniel Moxon (vocals, piano), Dicky Neptune (drums, vocals), Matt Rhode (bass, vocals), and Joseph Blood (guitar, vocals). According to the band, “Walk the Other Way” “is a song that fits with Bend Sinister's way of life, rolling against the grain. It urges us to take notice of the world and take action, but also realizes how hard it can be to look past the blinders of our own personal lives.”

Lyrics of “Walk the Other Way” by Bend Sinister
I've been losing my mind
I lost track of time
Haven't been on, never out of headline
Hurts to think, we don't ask why
You gotta try
You gotta try

How many times do I have to say?
Nothing comes without a price to pay
How many years do we go alone?
When you light a fire, we all get burned
Stop, stop, walk the other way

Now I take a breath
Don't be like the rest
Money is power, but power is meaningless
Well, I know you say you want to change the world
I believe in you
I gotta try (you gotta try)
I gotta try

How many times do I have to say?
Nothing comes without a price to pay
How many years do we go alone?
When you light a fire, we all get burned
Stop, stop, walk the other way
The other way [Repeat 2x]

Stop, stop, walk the other way
Stop, stop, walk the other way

How many times do I have to say?
(Stop, stop, walk the other way)
Nothing comes without a price to pay
(Stop, stop, walk the other way)
How many years do we go alone?
(Stop, stop, walk the other way)
When you light a fire, we all get burned
(Stop, stop, walk the other way)
[Repeat, but reverse lead and backing roles]
