“The Whale” by Postcards From Mars – A Song Review

At the start of “The Whale,” the expectation is for a Johnny Cash song to break free. Not close. Instead, the Cash-like start sets a tempo suitable for a steady walk. In contrast to the intro, the outro is forceful percussion.
In the middle portion of “The Whale,” vocals carry the song. The lead vocals are male, but the attractiveness of the track would drop if not for the female backing vocals.

Postcards From Mars is the project of Dutch producer and composer Bart van Dalen from Hilversum, Netherlands. He is joined by Dorus Smit, Danique van Kesteren, Pieter Zaal, and Tamara van Esch.

Lyrics of “The Whale” by Postcards From Mars
All is lost in the world,
Baby, can’t you see?
All holed up in a cove
By the open sea

And we all went down
In a war that we couldn’t leave.
I'm left behind.

Boats turn up with their guns
Pointed at my eyes.
We’re not alone, carry on,
We might be alright.

As the earth burns up,
There’s a crack on the other side.
We are locked inside these rocks.
Weird creatures in the water.

All messed up,
I am lost in the middle.
Alone in the dark,
Swallowed up by a whale.
As the earth caves in,
I am pulled by the undertow,
Locked inside its heart.
