Free Friday (“FL&R”) – September 15 (Handkerchief Thief )

Free and Legal Downloads? Yes, at least temporarily. Bands often temporarily permit free downloads of their releases.  The end of an offer may be based on the expiration of a set period of time or on a limited number of downloads.  But at least for now, here is a song that qualifies as a Free, Legal and Recommended (FL&R) download.
“Salted Skin” is a vocal and percussion standout. The vocals establish a residence in the falsetto range and the percussion provides the contrast with a décor in the lower range. In the first portion of the song from Handkerchief Thief, the percussion has the sound of using the metallic rim of the drums more than the drumhead.

Handkerchief Thief is the performance name of Sam McLaren. He is based in Melbourne, Australia. Quoting press materials:
“'Salted Skin,’ is the first single off the upcoming debut EP 'Hunting For Hummingbirds.’ is no exception. Written in the rugged isolation of the Bolivian Andes after months alone on the road, far from the comforts of his lover’s arms, ‘Salted Skin’ is about the lust and longing induced by separation. Born on two strings of a battered old travelling guitar, in the confines of the studio the track evolved into a lush tapestry of ambient electric guitars, toe tapping breakbeat drums, a deep synth bass that hits in all the right places, and generous lashings of McLaren’s rich, alluring falsetto.”
