The premise for the video of “Machine” flies in the face of the original persona of MisterWives, when gym shoe-clad Mandy Lee would travel from one side of the stage to the other with a half-run, half-dance infectious energy. The high level of energy persists, but sweet innocence does not.
“Machine” is an anthem set in a post-apocalyptic world. Mad Mandy! Of course, MisterWives is more than its lead vocalist. The instrumental support is the best thus far from a band that hasn’t lacked outstanding songs. The other members are William Hehir (bass), Etienne Bowler (drums), Marc Campbell (guitar), Mike Murphy (sax), and Jesse Blum (keys, trumpet, accordion).
We were first hit by “Machine” nearly a year ago, at Napa’s BottleRock Festival. It was our third festival encounter with MisterWives (after Live 105 BFD and Outside Lands in 2015). But it was our first appreciation of the edge that MisterWives brings to their version of Indie Pop. For a short time, “Machine” even fuses Hip-Hop elements into the band’s version of Indie Pop, beginning at 2:33 of the Soundcloud stream and ending with a laugh. Still, arguably the most interesting feature of the song is the arrangement that allows the horns to move in and out of the instrumental focus.
