Free Friday (“FL&R”) – February 10

Free and Legal Downloads? Yes, at least temporarily. Bands often temporarily permit free downloads of their releases.  The end of an offer may be based on the expiration of a set time or on the number of downloads.  But at least for now, here are songs that qualify as Free, Legal and Recommended (FL&R) downloads.
Finding songs that can be legally downloaded is easy. The difficult task is to find legally downloadable music that we recommend. The hope is to post at least one FL&R song each Friday. This week’s songs reside in very different areas of the genre map. The common characteristic among the songs is that they are “keepers.”
My Heart Is a Metronome released a four-track EP today. We praised the title track, “Tierp,” last week (CLICK HERE to listen to the song). However, it's a 2014 release that qualifies as being "FL&R." "The Whistler" has its emphasis on the acoustic guitar and vocals. The electric guitar periodically pushes the song into the Rock genre, then steps aside.
My Heart Is a Metronome is from Uppsala, Sweden. The members are Gustaf Simonsson (bass), Mattis Malinen (vocals, guitar) and Felix Carlsten (drums).

Lyrics of “The Whistler” by My Heart Is a Metronome
He be the whistler - ain’t got no problems no
He needs you ‘bout as much as a stone weighing him down
But you’re a purdy one - and he’ll stare at you for hours
'Til the morning sun tells him “No.’

Dutch courage on his side - give it time and we’ll have something
going down tonight - mmmh
And how her legs can sway - could they sway like that for hours?
'Til the mornin' sun ends this night

So go waste -
Some time -
Letting something -
Something different pilot your mind

Aight. So that’s a Glasgow kiss? Knocked right back into first person
Still my head’s a kite - and my eyes they’re a disco
And how the floor it sways - it’ll sway like this for hours
'Til the mornin' sun crowns me king

So go waste
Some time
Letting something
Something different pilot your mind

Watch me grow tall
Watch me grow strong
Watch me grow young
[Repeat]

Grow young
Go waste
Some time
Letting something
Something different pilot your mind
In her track, "Shutter Island," Jessie Reyez transitions among vocalizations, including an endearing child-like style, an angry style in which the admission of craziness comes with a self-assured statement that her straight jacket is custom-made, and a more traditional style in which the admission is one of being a “bad bitch.” And that ignores the interjections from the backing vocals. Reyez is from Toronto, Canada.

Lyrics of “Shutter Island” by Jessie Reyez
Goodbyes are getting old
Next time you can go ahead and go
I'm tired of begging you to love me

Goodness, gracious, you're amazing
According to you, I'm a lucky lady
So why'd you lie to me?
Why do I cry to sleep?

Good, gracious, I'm replaceable
You say that I'm too crazy
I guess you were right
I guess you were right

My straight jacket's custom-made though
(With fucking diamonds)
My straight jacket's custom-made though
(With fucking rubies)
I'm crazy just like Galileo
(I had a good day, you boring bitch)
My straight jacket's custom-made though
(With diamonds)

You keep hitting, I've been bruised
Holyfield, that carry you
I'm tired of begging you to love me

You're expecting me to say
Loco, please, please stay
I'm tired of begging you to love me

Goodness, gracious, you're amazing
According to you, I'm a lucky lady
So why do I cry to sleep?
Why'd you lie to me?

Good, gracious, I'm replaceable
You say that I'm too crazy
I guess you were right
I guess you were right

My straight jacket's custom-made though
(With fucking diamonds)
My straight jacket's custom-made though
(With fucking rubies)
I'm crazy just like Galileo
(I had a good day, you boring bitch)
My straight jacket's custom-made though
(With diamonds)

For a second I forgot I was a bad bitch
Begging you to stay became a habit
I'm tired of begging you to love me

I know I can be better, needed practice
I know I can be better, but the fact is
I'm tired of begging you to love me

Goodness gracious, let's just break up
I tried everything to save us
So why do I cry to sleep
Everytime you try to leave?

Goodness, gracious, this relationship
Is full of so much hatred
I guess you were right
I guess you were right
