Free Friday (“FL&R”) – December 16

Free and Legal Downloads? Yes, at least temporarily. Bands often temporarily permit free downloads of their releases.  The end of an offer is usually based on the expiration of a set period of time.  But at least for now, here are songs that qualify as Free, Legal and Recommended (FL&R) downloads.
Finding songs that can be legally downloaded is easy. The difficult task is to find legally downloadable music that we recommend. The hope is to post at least one FL&R song each Friday.
KM is Kimberley Hunter, a 24-year-old acoustic artist from Townsville, Australia. There are two opportunities to download “Their Own Storm.” The Bandcamp stream allows downloads on a "name your price" basis. Lyrics of “Their Own Storm” by KM (contains best guesses)
He wore a house of golden leaves
For the man with broken wings
In the middle of a playground

And if the children ever spoke
He'd always take a note
To snap down all the pretty trees.

‘Cause they reminded him of firemen
And all the messed up fires
That he never had excuses for

So he'd build his house of leaves
In the middle of the street
And wait for all the kids to knock ‘em down.

She wore a jumper with no sleeves,
that reminded her of thieves
and all the things they took home.

And if the teachers ever pried
As to why she'd leave their side
She'd simply look outside the window

And hope that she was there at night
Playing high up in the sky
Because she knows she'll never break through

That barrier of life
That keeps her locked inside
While her thoughts have always been home.

If perfection grew a tree
That could hold these two at ease
Then the world would have a new song

He'd sing a mystery of sound
That'd bring her from the clouds
And she'd break out in a new thought

And she'd write him pretty poems
That he'd turn into notes
And show them to their new world

They'd be the cutest two at ease
Living in their homemade tree
Like thieves do in their own storm

Like thieves in their own storm

If perfection grew a tree
That could hold these two at ease
Then the world would have a new song

They'd be the cutest two at ease
Living in their home made tree
Like thieves do in their own storm.

From Glasgow comes the off-center foursome Mickey 9s. The band was formed in 2009 and is comprised of St. Cool (vocals), Ants (guitar), Dave ‘One Man Rave’ (bass), and Ross Ross Ross (drums).
     “Superman” by Mickey 9s

Quoting the email submission from Badge of Friendship:
“It’s abundantly clear on 'Superman,' as well as past releases 'Ammunition' and 'Psycho Control,' that Mickey 9’s are gleefully stretching the limit of what a modern pop band is expected to be. The opening notes to 'Superman' are akin to Daft Punk channeling the 80’s funk-rock stylings of INXS’s Suicidal Blonde; St. Cool’s (vocals) incisive vocals cut through the funkadelic style guitar pieces, snapping synth-like drum beats and grooving bass lines.”
