“Wake in Fright” by Desert Planes – A Song Review

I know that love and justice don’t sleep together.” That line stood out the first time we listened to “Wake in Fright” by Desert Planes. Well-crafted lyrics can be clear and insightful, or they can be vague and thought provoking. The line in the Desert Planes’ song fits the second description, and it’s fitting for a band with press materials that begin, “In an indie-rock scene where stream counts are held in greater esteem than songwriting ability when it comes to music industry buzz, London two-piece Desert Planes may well be the exception to the rule…”
From an instrument perspective, the guitar is the standout in “Wake in Fright.” Desert Planes are Tom Farrer and Ben Niblett. Quoting the email submission:
Dealing in impassioned, eloquent, chiming-indie rock, London 2-piece Desert Planes will release their debut single ‘Wake In Fright' via Killing Moon Records on July 1st.

Lyrics of “Wake in Fright” (Some best guesses)
Strange is love
So far away
I paid the price,
You too must pay.

In emptiness
I pray for joy
If I return
Would you even know me?

Well I wake in fright
These tears roll by
Said it’s over love
It’s over love.

Well I wake in fright
I’m paralyzed
Said it’s over love
It’s over love.

You want to help me
Well then tell me, aw
Aw, baby keep it together
You want to help me
Well then tell me.

Well I think of you
Your love for him
Beyond the cage
You left me in.

I know that love and justice
Don’t sleep together
I’ll work you out
If it takes forever.

Well I wake in fright
These tears roll by
Said it’s over love
It’s over love.

Well I wake in fright
I’m paralyzed
Said it’s over love
It’s over love.

You want to help me
Well then tell me, aw
Aw, baby keep it together
You want to help me
Well then tell me.

You want to help me
Well then tell me, aw
Aw, baby keep it together
You want to help me
Well then tell me, aw
Aw, baby keep it together.

You want to help me
Then tell me.
