“Fools and Their Gold” by PLGRMS – A Song Review

“’Fools and Their Gold’ speaks of someone denying the inevitable end of a relationship. They can't – or won't – let go, despite knowing that it's not good for them.” That’s the explanation by Jonathan Bowden, who together with Jacob Pearson, is PLGRMS of Sydney, Australia. The lyrics of the song may be found at the bottom of this post (some best guesses).
The vocal ascends of “Fools and Their Gold” distinguish the song from other love-gone-wrong tracks. But the song arrangement is also praiseworthy, with changes in tempo being well coordinated with the instrumentation. Even the hand claps are used effectively. We don’t count ourselves among the fans of had claps (probably because even we can play that instrument well).

Lyrics of “Fools and Their Gold” by PLGRMS
I know you're here for now
You know I'm here for now
'Cause, nobody's keeping track
Maybe we should.

And you're not leaving yet
But I'm not placin’ bets
‘Cause, there's things that can't be said
And others that should.

But I can't
Let it go
When I know
That only you’d understand
Seeing gold
Leaving with empty hands
Should’ve known
That I’d make easy prey
That you’d throw it away
Just fools and their gold.

You cast your spell on me,
And I just couldn't see
Playing in your symphony
Of misunderstood

Can't stop this spiraling
I see the irony,
Your shadow holding me
Where you once stood

But I can't
Let you go
When I know
That only you’d understand
Seeing gold
Leaving with empty hands
Should’ve known
That I’d make easy prey
That you’d throw it away
Just fools and their gold.

I know you're here for now
(I know you're here for now)
You know I'm here for now
(You know I'm here for now)
I know you're here for now
(I know you're here for now)
You know I'm here for now

For now

When I know
That only you’d understand
Seeing gold
Leaving with empty hands
Should’ve known
That I’d make easy prey
That you’d throw it away
Just fools and their gold.

Fools and their gold.
