“Homecoming” by Josh Ritter – A Song Review

Last month, Josh Ritter uncovered another song from the upcoming album, “Sermon on the Rocks,” and we added another song that made the third quarter of 2015 a great three-month period to track developments in music. “Homecoming” is an attractive combination of piano, bass drum, interesting lyrics and soothing vocals. We were hooked even before the short burst of vocal layering that occurs at the 2:50 mark. And how is that sound generated at various times – the one that fits well, but is similar to the sound made by an inexpensive pair of shoes? For example, it is heard with a two-second periodicity starting at the 1:54 mark.

John Ritter is from Moscow, Idaho. The members are Josh Ritter, Zack Hickman, Sam Kassirer, Josh Kaufman and Liam Hurley. They are currently on tour. Importantly, Josh Ritter and The Royal City Band will visit San Francisco in January 2016. Tour dates are included in this post.

Lyrics to Homecoming
I feel a change in the weather,
I feel a change in me,
The days are getting shorter
And the birds begin to leave.
Even me, yes, yes, y'all,
Who has been so long alone,
I'm headed home,
Headed home

The nights are getting colder now,
And the air is getting crisp,
Our first taste of the universe on a night like this,
A box of wine, an alibi, and the hunger in her eyes,
In the place where the tree of good and evil still resides,
Still resides

Homecoming,
Homecoming, homecoming,

She said "show me what you got, babe,
I'm not like other girls",
Just give me your bad self and a place for us to make a stand
And I can move the world
Lift the valley from the floor, honey,
It'll turn to the sky,
They'll say that it's a miracle and you'll know damn well they're right,
Damn well they're right

Homecoming,
Homecoming, homecoming,
Homecoming,
Homecoming, homecoming.

(Hey now)
When the oracle spoke to me she was like a roadside song, (Don't go away now)
Do unto others as you would have them do,
Even if in turn they do you wrong, (Hey now)
This town right here is my everything,
Though I've been torn away, (Don't go away now)

It has my heart,
It has my heart,
Be still my heart,
My heart is still, (Hey now)
My heart is still,
My heart is still, (Don't go away now)

Get just a little bit higher,
Get a little tongue tied,
Gonna try to find whatever in the meantime,
That kind of immemorial,
That time before the fall,
That time before the Autumn really turned the corner,
Drive east of Eden,
'Till we start to feel the west,
You were never far from nowhere,
You could see it from the edge of town,
Honey, baby, wonder how it feels now,
Somehow I can't believe that it could feel like before, but,

The air's getting colder now,
The nights are getting crisp,
I first tasted the universe on a night like this,
An alibi, a box of wine, and the hunger in her eyes,
In the place where the tree of good and evil still resides,

Homecoming,
[Repeat]
