John Newman – A San Francisco Concert Opportunity

     We aren’t big fans of music videos. In fact, we seldom make a point of seeing a song’s video, even if we particularly like a song. But over this past weekend, we were watching a music show on the Palladia channel and the show didn’t fill the hour, so a video was used to fill the time. We got lucky. It was the video of a song that was introduced to Indie Obsessive in May. Specifically, we saw John Newman’s video for the song “Love Me Again.” It was our first viewing and it rejuvenated our appreciation for the single.

     The music video is embedded below. However, let’s first point out that London-based John Newman will be on tour in the United States early next year, and one stop will be in San Francisco (all of the dates are shown at the bottom of this entry). On January 16, 2014, Newman will be at the Rickshaw Stop. Yes, the venue continues to seem to have the inside track in bringing quality acts from the U.K., and London in particular. We are impressed with their booking skills.

     The video for “Love Me Again” has a Romeo and Juliet theme. Both the male and female arrive at a dance hall with a pair of brothers The brothers of “Romeo” seem much more comfortable with the relationship than the brothers of “Juliet.” Eventually, the couple gets away, but their outcome stays true to that of Shakespeare’s story (although by a means not available in the days of Shakespeare).

     But the real fun is in the dance hall, because that’s where Newman performs and that’s where the dancers are. The use of dancers who look like they belong in a small, unfashionable dance establishment provides credibility to the video. Our favorite character is actually the dancer pictured here with his shirt straight from Charlie Sheen in an episode of “Two and Half Men.”
